"Subtotal gastrectomy and diabetes"
Asked By: bamboo
Category: Type 2

Background Info Hide
Subtotal gastrectomy and diabetes Ms. Throop: Thank you very much for the advice. I have no problem understanding the technical stuff. But I am sorry I should have repeated my original question which is as follows: I am a pre-diabetic because I had subtotal gastrectomy in 1975 which caused the dumping syndromes. I would greatly appreciate your advice in managing this type of BG problem.

Hi bamboo. Regardless of the cause of the high blood glucose the goal of treatment is to acheive normal blood glucose most of the time. Most cases of abnormal blood sugar require the patient to obtain data by testing before and 2 hours after meals while maintaining a food and exercise log. The purpose of this is to determine which blood glucose spikes can be fixed with reasonable lifestyle changes and which require medication. Things get even more complicated as the healthcare team tries to determine which medication or medications would work best. I encourage you to team up with a diabetes educator to help get you started. There is no one magic formula for managing diabetes or pre-diabetes. However, patient involvement in collecting data and recording events is important in all cases. This is a challenging and time consuming task on the part of the patient. But it really is the best way to determine the best treatment for you. I truly hope this helps.
