Thanks for writing dLife. The amount of carbohydrates that should be consumed per day vary from person to person and really do depend on one's total calorie needs, which in turned in determined by weight status and activity level. Your question asked about prediabetes, but the A1c that is mentioned, at 8.6 looks much more like a level that would reflect diabetes versus prediiabetes. The strategy needed to help with blood sugar control and decreasing A1c would depend on a medical evaluation by a physician to find out why blood sugar levels are elevated which may include insulin resistance due to excess weight (and in this case, total calories per day consumed are very important, not just carbs), lack of insulin being produced by the body, which may mean that medication would be needed, and activity level. Because of your concerns and the time sensitive issues, a visit to a physician for a though evaluation and explanation, as well as a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator as soon as possible would be necessary in order to determine the safest and most effective strategy for blood sugar control.
