"Wavesense Glucose Meters"
Asked By: plichter

Background Info Hide
I just happened across the Wavesense Presto glucose meter at the store. I was wondering if there is a way to find out how good these may be? The product and their website tout how their products adjusts for blood sample differences and produces a more accurate result. The prices seemed reasonable compared to other products. Thanks

Accuracy of glucose meters is an ongoing “hot topic” for patients. All blood glucose meters must meet specific standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Presently, meters are required, 95% of the time, to be within +/- 20% of a referenced lab value. However, there are many factors can affect test results including, calibration, blood sample, hematocrit, humidity, age of strips etc. Meters are being designed now to eliminate some of these errors to improve results. The new Presto meter is reported to exceed these required standards due to specific algorithms in the test strips that “correct” some of these common errors. The meter is too new to say whether real life experience will support the same results achieved in a controlled clinical experimentation environment. This research paper describes in detail the meter and the accuracy reported by the company. http://www.wavesense.info/uploads/pdf/WaveSense_Presto_White_Paper.pdf Often you can receive free meters. You might want to pay for a bottle of strips, and do some self experimentation to see if you like the meter and feel you are getting more accurate results. Certainly as technology improves, the accuracy of meters will also improve.
