Dear Anu,

Thank you for writing dLife.

The hormones produced by the placenta in pregnancy—including estrogen, cortisol, and human placental lactogen (HPL)—are what trigger the insulin resistance in women predisposed to the condition known as gestational diabetes. As pregnancy progresses and the placenta grows larger, hormone production also increases and so does the level of insulin resistance - resulting in your higher readings.

You should talk to your doctor about your blood glucose readings and your specific target goals.

General guidelines are:
Fasting glucose level - No higher than 95 One hour postprandial (after eating) - No higher than 140 Two hours postprandial - No higher than 120
