"Can oral diabetes meds and insulin cause your blood pressure to take a drastic drop? I use blood pressure meds. Drops in the evening sometimes."
Asked By: copperhairpin

Background Info Hide
I take a lot of meds for various things. I use two types of Oral meds and Lantus insuline before bedtime. I use two types of blood pressure meds also. I noticed that my glucose level was low and about 45 minutes I felt ill and I tested my blood pressure and it was 101/56. This has happened about five times. Is this something to worry about? Sally

Dear copperhairpin, Thank you for your question. When you described the medications you are taking for your diabetes, I made some asumptions. You have type 2 diabetes and you are overweight. Being on two different blood pressure medications makes controlling your blood pressures more complicated. I think rather than your diabetes medications causing blood pressure changes, that it is your blood pressure medications causing swings in blood pressures. Can you do some home blood pressure checks and then share them with your physician? Maybe some adjustments can be made in the dosage being used or when you take them to prevent drops in blood pressure. I hope you are aware that carrying extra weight also leads to high blood pressure. Work hard on losing some weight and exercising to help you accomplish weight loss. Also watch your salt very carefully. It can contribute to high blood pressure and cause you to require more medication to control it. Please share your symptoms with your physycian. You seem to have a complicated case of diabetes and I would advise close contact with your medical team.

Thank you Ms. Fisher. I now have made contact with my personal care physician and I am keeping a diary for my blood pressure and glucose readings for a week to show him. Seems like keeping my glucose levels down use to be easier but I take more various meds and I am older. I do get discourage but I never totally give up. Thank you, Sally
