"Can diabetes affect the consistency of ejaculate? Prior to starting insulin statins fenofibrate I had had gelatinous lumps in mine for 1 year."
Asked By: valdyr

Background Info Hide
I was diagnosed after a bout of pancreatitis. My triglycerides were over 15000. sugar was over 400. I had urinary symptoms of diabetes for about 6 months before I was accurately diagnosed. So was it the sugar or the lipids. I no longer have said lumps.

Hi Valdyr! I checked with one of our expert columnists, Janis Roszler, who talks about sex and relationships all the time. Hopefully between Susan's answer and Janis', you'll get the understanding you need. This is what Janis had to say:

"Yes, poorly-controlled diabetes can cause the lumps you saw. When a person's blood glucose level is high, fluid from other cells is drawn to the blood to help dilute it. This is one reason why a person with hyperglycemia may have dry, itchy skin. The fluids needed to create smooth flowing ejaculate may be reduced also, which can cause clumping. When glucose levels are within a healthier range, the body regains its fluid balance and things return to normal."

Hope this helps, Valdyr. Good health to you.

Hello Valdyr: I hope I find you well, please accept my apology for the tardiness of the answer. My answer would be 'tentative' yes, although not a great deal of study has occurred in this area, study has been largely focused on concerns about impotence. Studies suggest: diabetes may affect male reproductive function at multiple levels as a result of hormonal control of sperm production, via sperm production itself or by impaired penile erection and ejaculation (a study by Sexton and Jarow, 1997). There are a number of reports in the literature examining the effects of diabetes on sperm production/consistency; stating "some found diabetic men sperm have higher fragmentation components": (1978-2004). Results of these studies have been conflicting suggesting the diagnosis of diabetes is "unlikely to impair reproductive function significantly in 'isolation", (Sexton and Jarow, 1997). Diabetes is a well-recognized cause of male sexual dysfunction, which in itself may contribute to sub-fertility, in the event this is an additional concern. Studies of sperm quality in diabetes have been limited to light microscopic assessment semen volume, sperm count, motility and morphology. Sub-optimal control of diabetes may have a higher prevalence of infertility in diabetic men (Sexton and Jarow, 1997). Handelsman et al. (1985) found only semen volume and total sperm output to be significantly lower in diabetic men. A large study of diabetic men (Ali et al., 1993) showed an increase in sperm concentration and total sperm output and a reduction in motility and no difference in sperm components structure-consequent; I would refer further discussion with you Endocrinologist/Urologist for more discerning studies. Be your best, regards Sue
