Background Info Hide
father in law diagnosed with type II diabetes. Currently checks levels 1-2 times a week! Eats small meals all day. Eats sweets whenever he wants. Has no feeling in feet! Gets agitated easily. Urinates frequently - every 45 min to 90 min. Very short and will obsess on things. Diagnoses with prostate cancer and had surgery about 8 years ago. Bleeding from bladder from scar tissue from surgery. Now is depressed, not eating, loosing weight. Mom in law feeding him lots of fruit to help him with BM's right now. She does not believe his diabetes is that bad because Dad tells her this. Is it bad?? From what I have read it sounds like it is.

Dear taw229,,p> High blood sugar levels will slow down healing as the nutrients needed to repair tissue cannot reach the site if blood sugars are high, this is also a cause for infection as high blood sugars are a medium for bacteria to grow. Your description sounds as if your father-in-law may have high blood sugars due to the frequent urination although it may be a result of his bladder surgery. It is important for him to test his blood sugar, he should have a fasting blood sugar of 70-130 mg/dl and 2 hours after a meal 140-160 mg/dl. Eating a lot of fruit may cause blood sugars to rise as fruit is a carbohydrate and turns to sugar when eaten. It also appears as if he may have diabetic neuropathy – damage to the long nerves of the hands and feet. This condition results in a lack of sensation in the feet and legs. It is very important that he practice good foot care, keeping his feet and legs well moisturized and checking daily for any break in skin, if he lacks sensation he may not be aware of an injury and as a result develop a serious wound very easily. I would encourage your in laws to attend a diabetes education class to gain better understanding of diabetes and improve his blood sugar control. Diabetes is a serious disease and can be managed with the proper knowledge. Unfortunately individuals do not feel sick when their blood sugars are high.
