"Can a low carb diet of meat and veggies be bad for me? In the past, my blood pressure has increased and I don't get a significant lowering of my bg. "

Thanks for writing dLife. Your question is a good one, as people respond to diet changes in different ways. A low carb diet may work for some depending on many factors including weight status, medications, exercise habits and of course the definition of "low carb" (which does not necessarily mean healthful!) If you have experienced increased blood pressure and your blood glucose levels aren't improved, balancing out your diet with small portions of healthful whole grain and low processed carbs may be more beneficial and add needed nutrients such as B vitamins and fiber to your diet. A diet too high in protein, especially red meat, can put exta stress on the kidneys and this is especially a concern if you already have high blood pressure. And remember, total calories count if weight is a concern, no matter where they come from. Do consult with your physician as well as a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator for diet guidelines that are best suited for your individual medical status and lifestyle.
