Hello,

I am concern that you have had an infection since May. How has your blood glucose (sugar) been?

Macrobid is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals as prescribed. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a return of the infection.

The bacteria may also be resistant to the antibiotic. Let your urologist know about the recurring infection. He or she can prescribe a different antibiotic that may work better. Keep in mind that not everyone responds to the same medication.

Any infection will increase blood glucose and increased blood glucose will increase the likelihood that the infection will occur and return. Continue to monitor your blood glucose closely. If your blood glucose levels stay elevated, contact your family doctor who is managing your diabetes or endocrinologist (a doctor who specializes in diabetes care). He or she can review your diabetes treatment plan and make the necessary adjustments.

The best way to avoid recurring UTI or any infection is to keep blood glucose in good control.

Take care.

I use to get UTIs and problems with Kidney infections also when I was in my late teen - early 20’s. They kept recurring but we did not know why. I was always on some kind of meds to get rid of it. Then one day a friend of my mom’s (she was the head teacher in a nursing program at a college) stated that the reason why I was having some many problems with the UTI is due to I did not go and urinate after having a sexual relationship with my husband. Once I started using the restroom afterwards the problems went away. I am not sure if this will help in your case or not but I have known many others that have had the same problems and it has helped.

My first UTI was years ago when I was 17. My mom told me to spill peroixide on my Clitoris in her terms "where the pee pee comes out." Cured me almost immediately. I do the same thing evertime I feel one coming on and I haven't had one since that day. Peroxide is less than a dollar and worth a try.

I hate to agree with the poster above but I have had the same problem too. Mine has been since October. Same symptoms - just a bad odor to the urine and pressure - no burning or irritation. The antibiotics work for a week or so but then the infection comes right back. My blood sugars are normal but I do have trace/small ketones in my urine when I test it.

I also have this problem; unfortunately I don't have an answer. I have had this for nearly a year! Like you, the burning symptom usually doesn't occur; pressure, discomfort and my urine has a bad odor when the infection is active. Have been on a couple medications that worked fine till I'm finished with that round of drugs. Currently on a maintenance dose of Macrobid and have been for nearly 6 months. Urologist has no definitive answer as to why this is happenning. I am concerned about being on an antibiotic for so long but don't know that I have an alternative. I have never been prone to UTI's before. I have been a Type II diabetic for several years and rely on insulin for control. My A1C is runs between 6.9 and 7.5....so I am in FAIR control of my blood sugars.
