"Any financial assistance for bariatric surgery?"
Asked By: kimber67

Background Info Hide
I'm a Type 2, recently diagnosed. I'm severely overweight (I guess morbidly obese might be a little "understated") with a BMI of 45 or so. My GP wants me to have bariatric surgery. However, I have insurance, which excludes me from a lot of programs. But as the only "breadwinner" in the household I can't afford my portion of the cost for bariatric surgery. Since I have insurance, that automatically removes me from the "needing help list" (apparently) and my income is more than the poverty level (but is (almost) supporting two people). Is there ANY HELP OUT THERE!?! Reaching desperation.....

Hello,

It appears that you were recently diagnosed with diabetes. Bariatric surgery can help improve blood glucose (sugar).

For people whose insurance do not cover this procedure, sometimes a doctor's letter of medical necessity might convince the insurance company to reconsider. It's worth a try.

To get some financial assistance, you can discuss with your surgeon and his supporting staff. They often assist patients by providing information on available financing programs and payment plans.

Be sure to learn as much as you can about bariatric surgery to determine if this is the right medical procedure for you. Keep in mind that candidates for this procedure often must demonstrate that they can be successful on a weight loss program. Many discover that they prefer to lose weight with lifestyle change.
