"Is cycling a good exercise for someone with Type 2 diabetes? Will it help me to lose weight? Should I choose a more full body exercise?"

About a month and a half ago I started cycling to and from work. It's 5 mi/30 min each way (so 10 mi/1 hr per day). I usually do this 3 or 4 times a week. There are a lot of gradual inclines and I average about 10 mi/hr. I previously lost 83 lbs watching my diet very strictly and doing Curves. I stopped being as careful with my diet and stopped losing weight. I have gained about 10 lbs back--half of that since I started cycling. Is it possible that this is from putting muscle on, or do you think it is because I have yet to get my diet under complete control, or is it possibly because cycling is not a total body workout? I'm not too worried about my diabetes. My a1c's have been good (between 5 and 5.5). But I want to get to a "healthy" weight and hopefully drop my medication. Do you think that cycling will help me to get there?

Dear rstoneham77, Bicycling is a very good exercise for anybody who can do it and especially for people with diabetes. So don't worry so much about which exercise activity you choose. Just exercise and do it regularly. Stay as active as you can and the weight will slowly go off without needing to restrict your diet excessively. Good luck!
