"How do I prepare meals for my husband who has been diagnosed with prediabetes but does NOT need to lose weight?"
Asked By: oscarshome

Background Info Hide
My husband was diagnosed with prediabetes in January of this year. He is 5'10" and, at that time, weighed 157 lb. With some dietary changes, his fasting blood sugar went from 126 to 114 in one month. He also lost two pounds. Since then, he has lost an additional 15 lb., which he did NOT need to lose. I need to know what to prepare for him that will be carb healthy but that will not lead to further weight loss or loss of muscle mass. HELP!

Hello,

Your jusband is fortunate to have you looking out for him. I agree that he does not need to lose any more weight. In fact, he can regain healthfully.

I recommend regular meals with 2-3 servings of whole grains (whole wheat pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread, barley, etc.), some vegetables, and lean protein at each meal. Details with menu planner are available on the MyPyramid website. Just enter his information for a suggested meal plan: Click here to read it!

His blood glucose (sugar) levels improved. That means that his sensitivity to insulin improved, or he became less insulin resistant.

Another very effective method for controlling blood glucose is regular exercise. It is good for everyone, with and without diabetes. It improves blood glucose even without weight loss. dLife discusses the benefits of regular physical activity: Click here to read it!

Take care.
