"Ketones, nausea, normal blood sugar levels"
Asked By: danielle4614

Background Info Hide
T1, 34 years old, recent A1C 8.4 - I am having normal (for me) blood sugar levels (120-170) but for the past few days I have felt very nauseated and somewhat dehydrated. I tested for ketones and got a trace/small result. I am not throwing up and can tolerate food at mealtimes. Should I be concerned about ketones even with normal blood sugars? I was treated for pancreatitis with DKA last year and this almost feels the same way, minus the high blood sugar readings

Dear danielle4614

One thing that comes to mind with your symptoms and your normal blood sugar - is your meter providing accurate results? At this time of year is strips are shipped or possibly stored in extreme heat that may result in damage to teh strips and inaccurate readings. You may want to call your meter company to ensure your meter is working correctly. Also doing a quality control check on your meter to ensure your readings are truly correct. Control solution may be purchased at your pharmacy. If you have control solution be sure it has not been open longer than 3 months. If you are experiencing the same symptoms as when you had pancreatitis you may want to contact your health care provider to ensure you do not have a reoccurrence. I would also check your blood glucose and ketones a bit more frequently to note any changes. Continue to drink fluids.

Hi Danielle, I experienced this when testing for ketones during pregnancy. (Type 1) My endo said: Small/trace ketones are nothing to worry about & perfectly normal. Even small/medium with a normal bg can be fine & caused by less carb consumption, exercise, etc. She said even non-diabetics experience this. Once I had normal bg's and HIGH ketones- this was during a bout with the flu. WIth the pump, I could keep my bg numbers normal, but with the flu & vomiting for days, I still had ketones. The ER staff didnt understand how I could have ketones & normal BG's, but once I got fluids with dextrose & extra insulin the ketones resolved :) Hope that helps, M
