"What process do I have to go through to get an insulin pump for my daughter?"
Asked By: jcmfaria

Background Info Hide
I'm an American living in Brazil. My daughter was born here and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 15 months old. She's almost 5 now and I would like to start her on a pump. Problem: there are only two pumps sold here and I'm not very interested in either one. What do I have to do to get her one in the US? I know a prescription is required, but how do I go about getting her one from an American endocrinologist?

My best guess is that your daughter would have to be seen by an American endocrinologist for that doctor to feel comfortable prescribing a pump for her. Additionally, I would think that doctor would want to have a relationship before starting pump and to follow-up with you as well. Many endocrinologists have criteria for patients going on pumps so you all would also have to meet those. Sounds as if you should discuss this with your endocrinologist in Brazil and see what he/she thinks. Additionally, I don't know if the actual insulin pump companies you are interested in would have recommendations for you if you called them.
