"I've had type 2 for about 4 years now. Yesterday my Dr. put me on Novolin N. 8 Units at bedtime. What is the best time to take my injection?"

Background Info Hide
I usually don't go to bed until 11pm or later and sleep until around 8am. Needless to say, I'm retired and 66 yrs young. Should I take my insulin around 10pm, or is another time more appropriate? I also take Metformin and Glypizide twice daily.

When you are taking an insulin like NPH it is important to take it at the same time every night. This insulin will "peak" or work its hardest about 8-12 hours after injection. This insulin, taken at bedtime, will work to lower your fasting blood sugar. If you usually go to bed around 11 PM, then taking the insulin between 10 and 11 PM is a good option. You want to be certain that you can take your insulin within an hour of that time every night for the most consistent blood sugar control.

Type 2 here maybe a good idea would be to test your bs before 10 and see where they are at. I take lantus a similar insulin and take mine about 10 and it does well for me. If your bs is real low you have to be careful. In time this will all become second nature.
