Prediabetes is a complex condition and unpredictable blood sugar numbers are common. When you say your morning numbers were 'up," what is your actual number? Is it still in the prediabetes range, ie. 100-125 or is it in the diabetes range and is 126 or higher? In prediabetes not only is your insulin resistance high and your insulin production unable to meet your needs, in addition, your liver is producing excess glucose. One theory is that you should have some amount of carbohydrate in your evening meal so that your body, especially your liver, does not think you are "starving" and try to send extra sugar into your blood during the night. Our liver is our "back up" system and sends sugar back into our blood if our blood sugar is getting too low, especially at night when we are sleeping and not eating. Since this system is not working efficiently when someone has prediabetes, the liver might think you need extra sugar in your blood when you really do not. Having carbohydrate in your diet, and having your body need to produce insulin is what actually "shuts off" the liver and stops the extra production of sugar. I know this sounds confusing, but do some experimentation. Have 30-45 grams of carbohydrate with your dinner and test your blood sugar 2 hours after dinner and again in the morning and see if this helps. Prediabetes and diabetes involve self-experimentation and learning about how your body responds to different situations. Your body is different from everyone else and the more you understand yourself, the better off you will be. Good luck!

I have found that a carb/protein snack at night helps me. I eat peanuts or almonds right before bed. My numbers are always lower than they are when I don't. That pattern became evident through routine testing and food/eating cataloging.
