Hi darbean! Congratulations on taking control of your health. Thanks for asking such a great question. Treatments for Type 2 Diabetes can be confusing because there are a lot of options with medications. Keep in mind that since diabetes is a progressive disease there is a chance that insulin will be needed at some point down the road. Studies show that well controlled diabetes may slow down the progression of diabetes. However, every case should be managed individually and some people will require insulin sooner rather than later. If a patient has made some lifestyle and dietary changes, are taking maximum doses of diabetes pills, and are still struggling with blood glucose control, then it may be time to start insulin. The dLife website has information under "Blood Sugar" about the recommended targets for before meals and 2 hours after meals. Talk to your doctor about whether you should be following the recommendations of the American Association of Endocrinologists or the American Diabetes Association. Good luck to you!
