"will regular exercise (aqua fit classes and swimming) help lessen or eliminate chronic leg pain?"

age 51, type 2 diabetes for about 7 years. experiencing chronic leg pain for about 6 months, increasing in painfulness. Pain occurs when sitting (at desk, computer), crossing legs, getting up initially, crouching, bending (but not when walking, thankfully). I find that when out and about during the day, (eg, visiting dr's office) I have no problem walking there, but avoid sitting down in a chair or even on the bus, because it is painful to get down and up. Sometimes they just ache continuously, mostly the pain is in the back of legs, from mid thigh to calf area, they 'feel' swollen and tight, but do not appear so. My doctor insists it is just age related and suggests there is nothing I can do about it. I have recently, (4 weeks) started aqua fit classes and swimming lessons at the ymca. I get that 'sore all over but feels good' feeling after, which goes away, but the specific leg pain I described is persistent and increasingly mobility limiting. Should I be worried about this?

It really depends on what is causing the pain and none of us can tell you that in this forum. If it is just gravity’s affect on joints irritated by diabetes than just being in the water might help since much of your weight will be supported by the water not your legs. If there is some underlying injury or condition causing the pain it may be eased by being in the ware but t may be aggravated by the exercise. Your best bet is to talk with your doctor before changing your exercise routine even if that change is going from not having one to starting one. No matter what start slowly, if something you are doing is increasing the pain stop doing it. When you feel fatigued stop and take a break. Many injuries are caused by “just one more” and the last one is done incorrectly or fatigued micelles failing. That is not to say don’t push your self, every day you should try to go longer harder or faster than the day before, but listen to what your body is saying.

You could have a few things going on with the pain. It could be a pinched nerve in the lower back and when sitting it could put pressure on the nerves. It also could be the start of neuropathy and neuropathy can have serveral serveral symptoms, stabbing, burning or tingling even cramps. You could start with a vitamin b-12 to see if it is never related and it might help good luck with it I have severe pain most days.
