"I'm consistantly having spikes of over 200 after exercise. My Endo and CDE are both confused. Any advice?"

Recently diagnosed type 2. Been doing 30-45 minutes of exergames (DDR, Wii Sports, etc) daily. Readings of around 130 before and over 200 after. Recently switched from amaryl to metformin, but other numbers throughout the day have been mostly fine (90-160), and a post-exercise spike happened once before the change.

Thanks for writing dLife. A post - exercise glucose spike is not unusual in persons with diabetes; this can happen because of the stress response that exercise can cause by very intense exercise and the release of hormones- this is more typical in those with type 1 diabetes, or those with insufficient insulin production causing an exaggerated release of glucose for fuel. You may also want to monitor how long the glucose spike lasts and overall how this affect your diabetes control, such as your A1c trend. As time goes on, diabetes does change so discuss the trends of your blood glucose levels with your healthcare providers and any needed changes in diet, medications or exercise routines. Consider any meals or snacks that are eaten previous to the exercise as well- this may also be a factor.

If you body does not have fuel before the exercise program its going to dump sugar to keep you fueled. Eat a bit of carbs before hand, make it a complex carb so that the spike isnt so bad.
