I am very happy to see that your son is going to see a physician on campus. Although insulin can cause scarring called hypertrophy, usually this develops gradually over a period of time, especially when the same site is reused over and over again for injection. Any lump the size you are describing needs to be seen by a physician and evaluated. If, after a complete evaluation, the physician believes that this could be related to insulin technique, I would suggest an appointment with a local diabetes educator to review insulin injection technique. I am sure it is difficult to have to be away from your son while he is investigating this issue. Good luck!
