"Is hard core boot camp type exercise okay for a type 2 diabetic?"
Asked By: loralyn
Category: Exercise

Background Info Hide
I am a type 2 diabetic that takes glyburide in the am only and I'm 5'3", 210 lbs and I started working out with a trainer at the gym after my doctor told me I was losing the circulation in my foot. I have never, ever hurt so much or sweat so much in my life but I love it. However, I'm concerned that my bg is 150 to 160 an hour to two hours after working out which is dinner time. Can a work out be to intense for a diabetic? Is there such a thing as working out to hard? Even though every inch of my body hurts most of the time now, I have never felt so good and so alive in my life and I don't want to quit. But, I also don't want to make my diabetes worse. I've lost 16 lbs and almost two dress sizes in 3 months. Thank you for your advice and for being here for all of us. My insurance doesn't cover an endocrinologist and my doc doesn't seem interested in answering in depth answers aboutt diabetes. Thank you again!

Thanks for writing dLife. Congratulations on your progress towards a healthy body and weight. Exercise is a very important and effective part of managing diabetes, but it does come with some special concerns. Make sure that you have discussed your exercise program with your doctor, as diabetes also increases risk of heart disease for many and these issues are often silent, but still very significant. Also be sure you are wearing excellent footwear for exercise as well as throughout the day, as circulatory and nerve damage- again often without noticeable symptoms- put your feet at high risk- be sure to examine your feet daily for any signs of problems. And if you are taking a medication such as glyburide you do have the potential for low blood sugar later- as you lose weight and increase fitness your medication may need adjustment. So keep track of your blood sugar tests and review these with your physician as well. Congratulations on your great attitude and communicate with your healthcare providers for individualized advice.

Wow that is absolutely great keep it up. Ok two things here, do you eat anything before you exercise. If you dont the body is going to scream for an energy supply. Its going to give you one, glucose from the liver so intense exercise will raise bs. Also you are on glubuiride which tends to lower bs so be careful as you lose more weight. Exercise is so beneficial just try a small snack before exercising and see what it does.
