Hello Lisa81; PS-there are some prescriptive medications for the brown spots, you'll need to speak to your PCP, it is a retinoic acid (tretinoin, Retin-AAE)product, this may be used on the lesions. Be your best in '09, keep up the good work. Regards again, Sue

Hello Lisa 81; Insulin resistance, I hear your frustration. Remedy for brown spots, also know as 'acanthosis nigricans.' (I'm guessing, the conditions are described in the literature). Described as occurring with IR, but, treatment is the classic!!! Causes of insulin resistance include genetic cellular receptor and post receptor defects, genetic ethnicity, high levels of free fatty acids, hormonal antagonists, or acquired factors (obesity, inactivity or smoking). Ok what can we change here??? The one main physical sign of insulin resistance is 'acanthosis nigricans', a tan-like darkening of the skin usually located at the back of the neck, elbows, knees or knuckles. Treatment would begin by observing all the 'good' management' recommendations. A-A1C<7, Lipids, LDL<100, HDL>70, BP<130/90, WT-BMI<25, activitiy >150minutes/week. Tall order, seek out support, I would encourage contacting your local hospital to get signed up for their certified diabetes educaiton program, CDE-RN, CDE-RD, are a couple of people with expertise to help with self-management of this insidious disease. The proof of effectiveness of your hypo-glycemic meds; Are they achieving your target goals??? Several other medications are available, however, a personal conversation with your Endocrinologist is indicated here. IR, No cure but, some successful treatment options available. Good luck and thanks for asking dLife. Call on us as needed. Regards Sue for You1
