"There are some days my scrotum will itch and others when it will not. It started after I was diagnosed type 2 and metformin use. Is it the medicine?"
Asked By: dbiellier

Background Info Hide
I don't remember ever having this problem until after I was diagnosed but I'm not sure if it is related to the high blood sugar, metformin, or something else. Originally, I was put on 500mg but recently increased to 1000mg daily. I didn't notice any difference in occurance or intensity of the itch. When I have the itch, it is very intense, red, and burning. I am compelled to scratch it and it is very difficult to bare it. It is localized to the right side of my scrotum and lower base of the penis. It has never spread any further than that. I have tried using anti-itch cremes but to no avail. Seems related to the high blood sugar count. It starts with various intensity, and stops itching usually within a few minutes. I am sure this is not a jock itch. I have never had that problem. When bathing, I make sure I rinse the soap and dry the area very well. When my blood suger is low, I don't remember having the itch but I'm not sure.

Dear dbiellier, Yeast infection could be a cause of your itching? Have you discussed your symptoms with your physician. Likely there is an easy cure/treatment for your condition. It is probably a prescription medication. Don't waste your money on anti-itch products. See your physician and get diagnosed. High blood sugars encourage the growth of bacteria in the pelvic region. Don't feel embarrassed to discuss this problem with your doctor. It is probably a very common condition they deal with all the time.
