Dear Mr. Johnnyscissors; You state a back injury and a diagnosis of diabetes since 2002. Regarding the cause of the 'left side pain.' With a history of a back injury, at the point of diagnosis and the impairment from evaluation with, your Neurologist(?) Neuropathiies could have been occurring at your time of diagnosis of your diabetes. Statistics suggest diabetes is in existence 10 years prior to diagnosis. You should be seeing a Pediotrist (DPM), for total evaluation of nerve functions primarily in your feet Generally speaking, neuropathy develops from the farthest limb ends, however, also is individual. That is the rational for total foot evaluation for any diabetic pathology, have a total evaluation of the eye by an Ophthalmologist. (Leading cause of blindness is diabetes). Due to your controversies with the opinions from your doctors about the cause of your related pains, (what kind of pain, is it numbness or other), I would encourage YOU to ferret out a Endocrinologist, who should be able to diagnosis specifically or direct you to the best source of diagnosis and treatment. Regarding stress and blood glucose levels, YES, any stressors will impact the blood sugars. Severe(surgery)-greatly, daily stressors-only slightly. Regarding the whole 'diet-food' thing. I have a personal philosophy of 'eat sensible', meaning a reasonable breakfast, lunch and dinner and maybe a small snack in the afternoon. Frequently, we believe we are hungry and it is truly thirst(get adequate amounts). If its a super concentrated sweet, it is a special treat-one a week. Regarding the risk of impotence, as I explained the neuropathies usually start at the extreme ends and work toward the center. (I hope that all makes sense). The healthiest things you can do, keep the blood sugars normal, check at least once a year the A1C, keep the blood pressure normal, lipid levels-normal, be active at least 150 minutes/week and seek out your local diabetes educators. I have both back pain and numbness and neuropathy. It is hard to seperate the two sometimes. A lot of it depends on if your nerves are pinched from the damage you have or if its neuropathy damage. I suggest you keep your bs as close to normal for all benefits of what you ask.
