"An alternative form of birth control?"
Asked By: blondie0824

Background Info Hide
I am a 29 year old T1 diabetic and I'm taking Yaz birth control. I've never had children and my boyfriend and I do not plan to ever have children. I'd like to find something else that I can use for birth control because I think it's hindering me from losing weight. I've been in a monogamous relationship for nearly 10 years and we do not like using condoms. Are there any alternatives (not including a diaphragm or sponges) that I could use that don't include weight gain as a side effect? I've tried the NuvaRing, but I found it too painful during intercourse. I thought about the patch, but I'm not sure if weight gain is a side effect for that and I'm loathe to have another thing on my body, since I'm on an insulin pump. Please help!

You can certainly try another type of birth control pill. Sometimes a switch in the type of product can make a difference in how you feel. There are currently a number of options available, including a pill that will give you less menstrual cycles per year. Check with your gynecologist about these choices.

You might ask your gyn about an IUD. If you are in a committed relationship with little to no chance of contracting an STD the Paraguard IUD is a good non-hormonal form of birth control.
