Dear Hunterswife, To determine if someone is having glucose intolerance (Prediabetes) there are certain tests that will give you the right answers. If you look on the DLife website you will see that prediabetes is diagnosed as fasting glucose intolerance if a fasting glucose (done after at least an 8 hour fast) is between 100 mg/dl to 125 mg/dl. Abnormal glucose tolerance can also be diagnosed with a glucose tolerance test . If blood is drawn 2 hours after drinking 75 grams of glucose and is between 140-199 mg/dl that is Impaired glucose tolerance. If testing is positive for prediabetes, a follow up test should be performed on a subsequent day to confirm the diagnosis. 1 hour after eating you will see an elevation in glucose because the carbohydrates from the foods we eat get broken down into glucose and travel in the blood stream on it's way into the cells where it can be converted into energy. A reading of 130 mg/dl is within normal limits. If you are concerned that she is at risk of developing diabetes I suggest that you discuss this with her physician so that He/She can work with you to formulate a plan to watch her as she develops. As a parent, the best gift that you could give her is to teach her good eating habits to avoid obesity as well as keep her physically active and develop healthy lifetime habits. You did not mention the food intake she had. Was it heavy in carbs or refined carbs. Does she need to lose weight many of this might give you why her reading was a bit elevated.
