"What liquid rehydration product is good after heavy exercise?"
Asked By: sbonner12
Category: Exercise

Background Info Hide
I am a 63 year old male that bikes daily at least 10 miles. I live in a very dry state (New Mexico), and have exercised all my life. Type 2 diabetic. I need something to rehydrate after exercise for muscle fatigue and long term energy. There is plenty of commercial products that do what I need but which is safest for me?

Hello Sbonner12; Great activity and great environment, and re hydration is of concern. Replacing the fluids is important before, during ( especially for intense exercise/sweating) and after. I might suggest the best time for your activity, (which I estimate maybe of 30 minute duration, and at 30 minutes daily, you might take the weekend off, you are completely meeting the recommendations of 150 minutes of exercise per the ADA), would be 1-3 hours after you have eaten, (this should keep the blood glucose levels from falling too low). Water is the best choice for this fluid replacement. However, a mixture of 1/2 cup 100% fruit juice and 1/2 cup H2O, will give you an adequate carbohydrate replacements for that extra long ride. This mixture would be similar to the 10% carb solutions you find in sports drinks. Just a little word of caution, it is best not to exercise when your oral meds are peaking, any ketones in your urine, blood glucose levels stay over 300mg/dl, numbness, tingling or pain in your lower extremities. Essential listen to your body. Please continue to call on dLife. Take care and enjoy the ride!!! Regards Sue for YOU!!
