The Question

Type 2 diabetes has a genetic component but engaging in a healthy lifestyle greatly reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. As a parent it is important to be the role model for children. Therefore it is necessary to be sure your children are raised eating a healthy diet – plenty of fruits and vegetables, limiting sweets and sweetened drinks. It is also important that you are a role model for engaging in physical activity. There is a direct connection between being overweight and physically inactive and the development of type 2 diabetes. In a large Diabetes Prevention Trial it was found that individuals who lost weight and walked daily decreased their risk of developing diabetes by almost 60%. So diabetes does not have to be inherited. Teaching your children to eat healthy and engage in physical activity from an early age is the best gift you can give them.
