Thanks for writing dLife. Your question is very good because hot dogs are a favorite food of many- and consumed often because they are easy to prepare and are inexpensive. However, it is important to consider the frequency of your hot dog consumption because they are a food quite high in fat and sodium. If a hot dog is consumed very infrequently, such as at a baseball game or a once in a while barbeque, this may not be harmful. However, those with diabetes need to not only consider carbohydrate intake, but also sodium and trans fat intake since high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol is also of concern. Consider also the other parts of your diet as well, as one food choice may not make a great over all difference, it is more the diet pattern, weight range and activity level that needs to be considered. If you enjoy hot dogs, discuss with your doctor what type of diet he or she would like you to follow and seek help from a registered dietitian with experience in diabetes who can help you find out how possibly to make a hot dog part of your diet on occasion. However, if you decide to avoid hot dogs because of the concerns mentioned above, this will promote an overall improvement in your diet pattern, depending on what you replace it with! Again, a high sodium intake is often associated with high blood pressure, so check for other food items that are similar in nature that you may also be eating.

I love hot dogs also, and I found a soy protein hot dog called Smart Dogs, Jumbo size...they are VERY low in fat, calories, not bad on sodium. We only have them once a week, but I eat them without bread and load up on mustard, ketchup and dill pickle relish unsweetened. Once a month I will have a beef knockwurst. This soy dog has satisfied my craving for a real hot dog...they are different in texture and taste...try them, you might like them.

We have started using the Johnsville Turkey Chedder Brats. Less in Fat. We have swapped them out at Family parties and no one knew the difference.
