"My son has type 1 and was diagnosed 4 yrs.ago. How do I get him to want to take care of himself?"
Asked By: shanmarc

Background Info Hide
I am on on our 3rd endocronologist. His A1C is down to 9.5 from 10 and the Dr. is high fiving him telling him to keep up the good work. All of the Dr's we have been to use this approach with him. I feel its not working! I had a private conversation with the Dr. and he told me thay my son will come around. It's been almost 4 years of high blood sugars, how long do I wait? I'm worried about the damage that the high blood sugars can cause. My son would never turn down a soda or other things he shouldn't eat or drink. His average blood sugar is high 200. He is frequently 500 or higher. I don't want to do nothing...Somehow I need to get through to him. I don't "nag" him anymore. Any suggestions would help. I'm sure he's not the first teenager that thought he was bullet-proof! Thank you!!!!

Having two sons that I have raised with diabetes since they were toddlers, I feel your pain. The best advice I can give you is to make it a "family" effort. That is, everyone get involved not in focusing on your son's diabetes, but in living a healthy lifestyle together. If all of the family starts to eat healthy and exercise together, your son will get more control. Children need to feel a part of your family, not isolated. Diabetes can be a blessing if all of the family members embrace this "new" healthy way of living.
