i have been a diabetic for about 5 years and my wife was a diabetic for 20 years before she passed from cancer. we never changed our lifestyle and were able to keep the sugar in control. my sugar most mornings are 100 to 120. the only things i have changed is the pasta i use and the bread i use. i also check alll products as to how much sugar they have per serving. i change regular sugar to splenda. i have not had any problems keeping my sugar under control. my last ac1 test was 5.9. since i have been diabetic the highest my sugar has been 165 in the morning and that was during the holidays.

It sounds like you have made some pretty significant changes to your diet even if you dont think so. You are absolutely right when it comes to carbohydrates, fat, protein intake the amount you use or the portion you eat is key!

I always tell my patient's it's better to make small almost unnoticeable changes (like switching to Splenda) you can stick to than making extreme one's ( like vowing to elimate something you really enjoy forever!)

Looking at food labels is definitely important, but you should read it from the top starting with Serving Size and work your way down. By looking at the sugars on the label, it sounds like you are controlling the amount of added sugars in your diet, which is awesome, but also pay attention to the Total Carbohydrate and Fiber content of the food, because depending on the amount of let's say cereal you eat, and whether or not it contains fiber may determine how fast and how much your blood sugar rises.

Try to buy products that are low in saturated fat or use less of a product that is high in saturated, as a diet that is high saturated fat can definitely effect your cholesterol numbers ( especially your Total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol)

The A1c goal is under 7%, and yours is 5.9%, which is fantastic! Keep up the good work!
