Hi Davela: Yes, lizard spit. At least you've kept your sense of humor!!! I do believe examining some changes in medications and the continued work with your endocrinologist/Personal Care Physician to investigate relief from pain is the best course. The literature suggest several medications are available, but, the underling treatment is the MOST uncomfortable of all. Treatment begins with lifestyle. Get back to the basics, the key is achieve blood glucose stability and other health factors. To assure continued self-management following the key ABCs: * A is for A1C, previously known as hemoglobin A1C—a test that reflects average blood glucose over the last 3 months. The goal for most people with diabetes is <7. An A1C of 7 corresponds to an average blood glucose level of 150 mg/dL. *B is for blood pressure. The goal for most people with diabetes is <130/80 mm Hg. *C is for cholesterol. The goal for people with diabetes is an LDL level of <100 mg/dL, an HDL level of >40 mg/dl in men and >50 in women, and triglycerides level of <150 Monitor blood glucose levels, never exceed a 2 hr. after eating of >140mg/dl.,meal planning involves monitoring carbohydrate intake at meals and snacks, spacing meals every 4-5 hours and portion control. General recommendations include eating a wide variety of foods, reducing total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol, limiting high sodium foods, avoiding excess protein intake and providing adequate fiber. All meal plans should be individualized to meet blood glucose, lipid and blood pressure goals. Seek out support from local organizations, certified diabetes educators, if you do not already have, and do NOT give up, a great deal of study is being put into this insidious disease, treatments are evolving. In the meantime, if OK'd work on strength and balance. Potential improvement has been seen from strength training, improving coordination and balance. Seek out an expert to work within your limitations, no falls or fractures.Sue

try an over the counter medication called Zostrix Neuropathy. Its a cream that you apply whereever there is pain (feet, legs) (not on hands though because if the cream gets into your eyes it will sting). You can get it at almost any drug store and clinicals have proven that 90% of people who tried it experienced a better quality of life as a result of at least some pain relief.

My a1c has been below 7 for so many years I cant remember. The neuropathy is still there and in fact my a1c is 5.9 now. I have been on all the natural and prescription meds you can think of, none have taken away the neuropathy pain.
