The "Diabetes Essentials" web site advertises that their products may be helpful to people with type 2 diabetes. Consult your physician about any nutritional, vitamin or mineral supplements. Supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as are prescription medications. Also, they may be more expensive as insurance companies do not reimburese for them. The American Association of Diabetes Educators advises patients to contact the Web site of the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. This site contains many consumer savy tips for making informed decisions about supplements. The addresss is www.cfan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-savvy. Essential information that you need to consider before taking a supplement also include these points: some supplements may interfere with other medicines that you are taking, they may cause problems if you have surgery, you need to find out how to report any adverse side effects you may get after taking them, and is the product's safety/effectiveness supported by reliable research. In addition, if you decide that to try a supplement, make sure to check your blood sugar and note the effects. Good luck.
