"My father who was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, has severe leg pain and stiffness and cramps, not in his feet, in his legs. Any suggestions"
Asked By: lennea

Background Info Hide
he has been walking around like his legs are fused together for almost a year, it's painful to watch, his doctor was unsure of what to do about it, and if the diabetes was even causing it. I believe it is. Any advice on what he can do to stop the pain and cramps, and help get back his mobility, or even something he may be able to bring up to his doctor since he does not seem to know, would be of much help. He acts like it does not bother him, but you can see it does. Please help.

Dear lennea, It sounds like your father needs to see a specialist to have his problem diagnosed. Many people with vascular disease have symptoms like you are describing. You might suggest he book an appointment with a vascular physician. Vascular disease is common in people with diabetes as it effects the blood vessels. So, if the blood isn't flowing well in the legs, the person gets a lot of pain and can't walk very far. It possibly could be a side effect to any statin cholesterol medication he is taking. I hope these two suggestions give you some more avenues to explore to solve this mystery!

It actually could be a side of affect of neuropathy as you father could have had diabetes for a long time before dx. He can try alpa lopic acid or B vitamin that might help. There are also prescribed meds that might help the the vitamins are cheap and if they work thats great. I have big pain in my legs along with femoral cramping. Its been going on for years.

I was having the leg and feet cramps also. After I started eating more veggies it has decreased. I can tell when I don't eat veggies for a couple of days, I get those cramps back. This helps me so it might be worth a try. Good luck
