"Dr. recently prescribed benazepril 20mg because my urine microalbumin read 28.1. I already take a BP medicine Diovan 80mg. "

Background Info Hide
Dr. recently prescribed benazepril 20mg because my urine microalbumin read 28.1(should I be worried?). I asked the nurse what does that mean and she never got back to me. Well in my own search I see it is a HBP medicine. I already take Diovan 80mg a day. Is this going to be a problem? I'm afraid to start the new meds.

Dear packer50, Benazepril is a member of the drug family referred to as ACE Inhibitors. This class of drug ends in the ending "pril". There are many drugs in this class, such as lisinopril, enalopril, etc. This class of drugs helps protect the kidneys from damage caused by diabetes. They are prescibed in low doses even to people who do not have diagnosed high blood pressure. So, try to take some home blood pressures and share the results with your doctor. It is possible that you might be able to cut back on the dose of Diovan.
