"I am type 2 and take lantus and apidra. Because of finances, I wanted to know if I could lower my lantus from 40 to 30 units a day for maybe 6 weeks."

Background Info Hide
I've been type 2 for 17 years and on lantus for about 16 months now and lantus and apidra basal bolus for about 8 months. I count everything. Because of a change in our insurance my copay went from $10 to $147 for the strips, $30 to $168 for lantus and $50 to 186 for apidra. I got laid off, of which I feel was because of my diabetes. They now have someone else doing my job that makes less and doesn't take the insurance, so they save a bundle on him. But I know it's not the best practice, but I can adjust my apidra several times a day which I do and cut back on my carbs so I can keep it down but the lantus is fixed. If I tried the lantus at 30 for maybe 6-8 weeks and then went back to 40, would this cause me too many if any problems if I in turn kept my carbs down. Thanks for any help or advice you or anyone can give me. I know I'm not the only having to make choices in these times.

Lowering your insulin is never the best idea. Instead, check with Sanofi-Avenis, the company that makes Lantus about their patient assistance program. In addition your state may have a program for emergencies such as yours to help you pay for medication. The local chapter of your ADA also has resources that wil help you. You may also speak to the ADA about your feeling of getting laid off because of your diabetes. This is a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Good luck, Susan
