"Do I really have Gestational Diabetes"
Asked By: bambib

Background Info Hide
My 1 hr glucose was elevated at 169 and I couldnt finish the three hr because I threw up, the first draw after was 198 . I have been checking my blood every hour after a meal , I am eating the diet they told me to but when I eat any type of sugar or food they said not to my levels go up to 160 or 228 ( just a few examples) but at other times when I have eaten sugar they go down in the 70's. They are treating me as if I have diabetes but I need to know for sure . My fasting glucose is always in the 70's

Thanks for writing dLife. Since your one hour glucose level was elevated and you have elevated blood sugar levels after eating higher carbohydrate foods, it is likely you do have gestational diabetes. Since it is known to be highly beneficial to keep blood glucose levels tightly regulated during pregnancy, your health care providers are very correct in taking a conservative approach. I would highly recommend that you have another consultation with your physician and diabetes educator to discuss the diagnostic criteria and blood sugar goals during pregnancy as well as the other health issues that they are monitoring for you. The health of the baby can be significantly affected by elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy, so following the instructions of your healthcare providers is critical.

You for sure are experiencing something diabetic related. If you dont have gestastional diabetes it is advanced even more. Readings can go up or down we all know that. Of course 70 is normal reading but the higher numbers you are having are for sure not. I would limit carbs and see if that helps the higher numbers. The body is a strange thing and when I think my numbers are great they can do a change on me. I have it for 24 yrs and my numbers are all over the board.

I have not had a problem with keeping my levels low. I have had one test that was high in the last 2 weeks. I was told not to eat too many carbs, but I believe I had way too many at one meal. The hour test showed 135, so it wasn't so high, but higher than what it should have been. If I follow my diet the levels are where they should be. Hope this helps.
