Blood Glucose Monitoring
Background Info Hide
I have BCBS and have had diabetes for 16 years. I currently use an Animas pump and test my blood 6-10 times a day. I need the CGM because I am going to be in charge of the lives of children and cannot risk going low unexpectedly. Have been working with Medtronic but my current pump cannot be replaced until June 2010. Am looking to find a cheap CGM (preferably the dexcom 7 or the gaurdian) that I may just buy but do not know where to look. Please help!

Insurance coverage for CGM's is generally a bit complex, but if you are willing to be vigilant about standing up to your insurance company, you can prevail. The first step is to talk with your insurance company and see what type of documentation they need to pay for a CGM. They may also have a preferred company that they woould like you to obtain the CGM from. The more documentation you have from your doctor about the dangers you face without a CGM and how your control has been within the past year or so, the better. Insurance companies manage risk, so that if they see that not approving the device is a high risk to your health, and thus a potential liability to them, they will be more likely to approve this. Your local diabetes chaper may be able to help you with the type of support documentation you need. Good luck.
