Dear dgsmith, I am sure your wife and daughter mean well, but they do not understand about foods. One thing you may find helpful is to ask your doctor to refer you to a dietitian, certified diabetes education program and bring your wife with you to the classes. This will help her gain a better understanding of diabetes and also engage her in helping you maintain good blood glucose control. You also may want to include her in your doctor’s appointments so she can receive the same message you are receiving from your doctor about the seriousness of diabetes. There is excellent information about food on the dLife website that you may want to share with her. Good luck, I am sure once they have a better understanding they will be willing to change the foods they prepare.

You need to see if you can educate them to the seriousness of this disease in whatever way you can and ask them to please adapt their cooking to include their favorites but to also take into account your nutritional needs. There are so many sources on the Internet that will provide information about the risks involved in untreated diabetes. If that fails and they don't see it or don't want to change, the only thing you can do is take matters into your own hands and buy things you know are safe for you and do your own cooking. I'm sorry you're having these issues. Don't give up on doing what you know you need to do to be as healthy as possible!

Unfortunately not all family members understand the importance of controlling you carb intake or exactly what foods are considered carbs. You could have them go with you to your dietician for current education and involve them in your health. If that isn't an option you may have to get your own meal staples and us what they cook as 1/4 of you plate of food. The other 1/4 should be a lean protein and the remaining 1/2 needs to be a variety of vegetables. It can be a mixed bag of frozen veggies or fresh, steamed or raw. Spray the steamed veggies with spray on margarine and Mrs Dash seasoning. This is the EASIEST way to maintain a correct balance of foods. It is your disease so you need to be more proactive about getting you solutions. Family should support you but you need to lead the way. Show you family the American Diabetic Assoc web site and let them research diabetes for you. Diabetes is the number 1 cause of blindness and is the leading reason we die of heart failure, kidney failure, loss the feeling in our feet and without good control possiblylose our feet. Diabetes kills us quietly and from inside. Our elevated glucose works our core systems to death anf leaves us destroyed without every showing the damage on the outside. That is why it has the name of "The silent killer". Takr you wife to a dialysis unit and let her get a good look at all of the people who's kidney's simple couldn't keep filtering the glucose. Bottom line is pasta is made up of starch, starch turns to glucose in you body and glucose not controlled will kill you.Good Luck.

I can understand your situation. Learning to eat differently is hard. I am a type 1 & my husband is type 2. Eating pasta occasionally is ok (in small portions, like no more than 1/2 cup) You just can't side down anymore with a big plate of spaghetti. Pasta, can't be eaten for the whole meal, only as a small side to your protein. Your carbohydrate portions are extremely important. Depending on your size and activity level you can adjust your carbohydrate intake so your blood sugar stays stable. Also, you should try the whole pasta. Still has a lot of carbs but won't give you as much of a blood sugar spike. Your family should help you with this. Diabetes can get worse if you don't control it, please keep trying.
