Dear roxhos, Believe it or not, there are people who don't respond well to some medications. Actos is one of those medications. We evaluate the people we put on actos about six months after they start it. If we don't see that it is helping bring down their blood sugars, we call them non-responders and take them off it. There are other diabetes medications you can try. Byetta and Januvia are two. They are thought to limit weight gain more than some of the other medications. And, there is always insulin. Your husband really does need to get his blood sugars under control. Another thing he can work on is the amount of activity/exercise he does. That will burn off calories and lower his blood sugars. Talk to your doctor about the options he/she suggests and be sure to check whether your insurance covers the medication.

I was in the same boat as your husband, taking many oral medications including Actos and Januvia and my sugars were not coming down below 200. It was very discouraging. Finally I decided that I had to do something about it. So I changed my doctor, changed my eating habits and started walking daily. Now my blood sugars are in the upper 90's to low 100's with peaks about 135. Listening to my doctor and following a lot of the advice from this site I've cut my total food intake in half or less. I've cut my carb intake almost completely (well under 100g/day) and I'm walking between 1 and 3 miles every day (well almost every day:-)). As my new doctor says, "I shouldn't still be HUNGRY when I finish a meal but I definitely shouldn't be full." I've also found that eating a little bit every couple of hours instead of three main meals has helped a lot. A typical day is a 1 egg cheese omelet at 6:30 or 7:00. A medium apple or pear at 9:00, sunflower seeds and/or almonds at 11:00, carrots, celery and Hummus between 1 and 1:30, A serving of Extra sharp cheddar cheese about 3:30, dinner is a small piece of chicken, pork or beef with a large salad or other leafy green vegetables about 6:00 and then a small snack of a half a serving of Extra dark, organic (85-90%) cocoa chocolate at around 8:30 or 9:00. To drink... Water, water, water and more water. Sodas and anything else with High Fructose Corn Syrup must be eliminated from the diet. I noticed a huge drop in my blood sugars within a week and in the two months I've been eating this way I've lost 14 pounds. The doctor says, "It's a start." Good Luck. The results are worth it. your husband will feel magnitudes better and you know he'll be around for a long time.
