"I was just told I have gestational diabetes. Can stress and changes in eating habits effect the test results in the prenatal glucose test?"
Asked By: deannb

Background Info Hide
I was unable to complete the 3 hour glucose test. I got sick 30 minutes into the test. My doctor based her decision that I am on my fasting reading of 98 and my 1 hour test reading of 149. I do not have any symptoms and have not had much weight gain in this pregnancy. I am at 29 weeks and have gained 16 lbs. This is my second pregnancy, and was not diagnosed with GD with the first chlld who was 8lb 3oz. I have had a lot of stress in my work environment as well as stress dealing with my insurance company in the last few weeks. I also had to change my daily lunch time to accomidate the first test. My appt was at 1:20 and I had to eat an hour earlier than I normally whould have. I also did not eat a full lunch, but more of a snack to last until the end of the test. Because I couldn't finish the test I am wondering if these items would have caused the higher readings.

Dear Deannb: The stress you describe certainly could have had an impact on your BG reading - it always can. Nevertheless, all that really seems important at this point is keeping Baby healthy. If there is even just a zero to zillion chance that you have GD, don't you want to do all you can to protect that miracle growing and kicking inside you? If you are testing first thing every morning and your readings are less than 90, and if you're testing after meals and your numbers are less than 120, then you are probably as safe as safe can be! If not, then close contact with your doctor is important so you can be sure and get your control in perfect shape. This will help ensure a healthy baby, -- not too big, and not too little with a healthy normal BG level of his/her own following delivery. Good luck, Happy Gestation, and hang in there!

I apoligize but this is not an answer . I did not complete the 3 hr glucose either, I got sick before they could do anything at almost an hour it was at 198 with a finger prick ! If you do not mind my asking, what are your levels now. Mine are only normal if have NO sugar at all and eat only exactly what they tell me. My Dr's will not diagnose me but are treatingme as if I hvae it .
