"What can I do about the excess of abdominal fatty tissue increasing due to taking Lantus? Why do I not like food anymore, especially red meat?"

Background Info Hide
I have been Type 2 since August 2001. I lost 50# and have mainained my weight up to the present time. The only place I have begun gaining weight is my stomach. I know that excess fat around the middle is bad for me. Exercise has not "flattened' it any, I stay on a 1200 calorie or less diet (I have no appetite for food in general) and I exercise daily (walking mainly). So, I eat mainly vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and beans for protein. I guess I basically have 2 questions. Why do I not like food anymore and how can I get rid of this excess fat in my stomach?

Dear barbsynder, You stated that you have Type 2 diabetes and are taking insulin and oral medications for diabetes. Most people with Type 2 diabetes have extra fat in the abdomen. You are typical of the body shape of many people with type 2. It appears you are doing the right things.....1200 calorie diet and exercise. Unfortunately, You may not be exercising enough to enable you to drop fat. Doing crunches, etc., only strengthens the abdominal muscles but doesn't get rid of the fat. Some people have tried the diabetes medication Byetta and have found that it helped them to lose weight. I don't have enought information about you to know if you are a candidate for it, but it is worth discussing this option with your physician. People on insulin usually have a hard time losing weight. Byetta seems to be the drug rated as most helpful to lose weight. Januavia, a pill is the next favorable drug. Good luck and be sure to have that discusion with your physician soon.
