Background Info Hide
Diagnosed in 1983 Type II - as more research / info available I'm now a SYNDROM X TYPE II ON INSULIN PUMP. Extremely Insulin Resistant - AND - an ovo vegetarian. Have the BEST diabetic doctors in country - Head of Dept. at Loma Linda Univ. Also have severe arthritis in every joint of my bady and can barely move, and no longer walk. Exercise is out of the question. My questions are - HOW DO I EXERCISE for cardiovascular benefits and glucose control? And ... WHERE CAN I FIND AN EXCELLENT VEGETARIAN DIET for LOW CARB / GLYCEMIC LOAD (Higher protein)? Cannot have anesthetics or take any pain medication, so surgery is not an option. Would like your input / opinions on Rob Thompson, M.D.'s book GLYCEMIC LOAD DIET. Just joined this wonderful site, hoping diabetic nutritionist might respond. Also, can't eat a lot of substitute veggie items as lots are full of preservative, have good deal of carbs and are rarely pure protein. Opinions of eating Tofu and Soy for the higher protien?

Dear Liz- Thank-you for contacting dLife. I am from the Loma Linda area and I can safely say the answer is just under your nose. I would go over to Clarks or the Loma LInda market and you will find a great many recipe cards and books to help you. It almost sounds to me that heading towards a Vegan lifestyle would be to your benefit. Have you asked Tom over at the Diabetes treatment Center for a diet consult? They have a wealth of info there, since they are a vegetarian facility.

Please do not consider that since you can't walk you can't exercise. I just came back from a conference and we had a great demo on exercising in bed or chair. We just cranked up the music and did a Zumba routine. Essentially we moved our arms and legs to the best ability and had a great workout and lots of fun. It is all about getting the heart rate up and warming the core. Find some fun upbeat music and get those arms, legs twisting, and raising. Start slow and work your way up. Just have fun. Another great option is to take your arms and write out the alphabet with each arm. Then repeat with each foot and or leg.

The enhancement of blood flow will improve your overall health. Take care and enjoy all your new foods and recipes.

Check out Dr. Barnard's book: "Reversing Diabetes" . Also, there is a great website 'whfoods.com' that gives you recipes, but allows you to emphasize certain ingredients.
