"I am 33 weeks preganant and was just told after my fasting test that I have gestational diabetes. The diet they gave me is ok but hard to modify and follow. My blood sugar level etc. were so great when I was on the Southbeach diet. Can I follow phase 2 plan of eating on the Southbeach diet for this gestational diabetes? It looks somewhat similiar...fruits, veggies, lowfat meats, no refined carbs...just healthy I guess. Let me know please."

Dear rhowell,

As a pregnant woman with diabetes, you need to have a meal plan created individually for you, and personalized, by a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. I would follow that meal plan as closely as possible. Dieticians are trained to calculate the essential nutrients a mother-to-be needs during pregnancy to maintain good blood sugar control and to ensure a healthy baby. Eating healthy foods listed on the south beach diet should be fine as long as they are incorporated into the quantities listed on your meal plan. I would call the dietitian that wrote your meal plan and ask her specific questions about quantities and substitutions. The following links may be helpful:
