"I know that people don't know exactly what causes type 1 diabetes, but was wondering if anorexia could be one. I was anorexic for a year and then a year later I found out that I had type 1. My nutritionist said that it could be a cause, but I wanted another person's opinion."

Dear fairytales,

You are correct that we don’t know what triggers Type 1 diabetes. Some theory focuses around many instances being a form of an auto-immune disease. That is, the body responds to a trigger and attacks itself. In this case, the body destroys the beta cells in the pancreas. I am not familiar with research that states that anorexia causes Type 1 diabetes. But, regardless of the cause, now you have the diagnosis, you need to learn how to take care of yourself and practice better eating habits. Ask your health care provider to link you to a diabetes educator. Learn everything you can about diabetes and about how to take good care of yourself. People with Type 1 diabetes who eat in a healthy manner, take their insulin and other medications as prescribed and maintain in frequent contract with a knowledgeable health car provider can live long and healthy lives.

I am very interested to see your question as I too have had the exact same experience! I was anorexic for a year and then found out I had type 1 diabetes. All the professionals are telling me that these two issues are not related but I can't help but believe that they might be.
