"What relationship is there between type 1 diabetes (34 years) and lack of desire for sexual intercourse? Besides the diabetes, I have also had a complete hysterectomy (13 years ago). I have 3 children (one teenager and 2 adult children) and I'm only in my mid-40's. I don't feel I am old enough to have this problem and would appreciate any advice you could give me. CJ"

Sexual intimacy is a very important, as well as enjoyable part of our lives. Approximately 35% of women with diabetes can experience sexual problems related to diabetic neuropathy. This can include lack of desire, decreased lubrication, delayed or absent orgasms, and frequent vaginal infections. Loss of desire can also be caused by depression, hormone changes related to menopause, or stress. Options are available for you, and I would recommend you speak to your gynecologist regarding which option would be best for you. Whether you are 40 or 80, if sex is important to you, you do not need to just “do without it.” In addition, if this is caused by your diabetes, it could be one of the first signs of nerve or circulation problems in other parts of your body. Consequently, for your own safety and health, you should speak to your doctor about your concerns.
