Dean Concerned1,

I am glad that you are asking these questions. Yes, you are at higher risk of developing diabetes than the general population. The numbers vary, but generally you have between a 20% and 50% risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next five to ten years. If you are a member of a particular ethnic group, especially African American, Hispanic/Latina, Southeast Asian and Indian, your risk is even higher. Also, if you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, your risk is higher. Recent studies have shown that children of mothers with gestational diabetes do have a higher risk of developing diabetes later in life, they also have a higher risk of being obese. Asking these questions hopefully means you are looking to decrease your risk factors. There are lifestyle choices you can make now to lower your risk, including exercising for 30 min 5 days per week, eating a diet low in saturated fat and calories, and maintaining a health body weight. The following links will provide more detailed information.

Gestational Diabetes

Your local diabetes center may offer classes on diabetes prevention. If you have not already done so, I would suggest you have a fasting blood sugar test done now and every year. Teach your children about healthy lifestyle choices as they grow and when appropriate let them know that they are at risk for developing diabetes.
