"I am 34 weeks pregnant with my second child. I was wondering , I did not have gestational diabetes with my first baby so is there a chance that I can with this one? I also hate having to test the way they tell us to by drinking that gross sugar water, isn't there another way to do it? Also I am measuring at 32 1/2 weeks pregnant and I am 34 weeks so that is a good sign that my baby is a good weight right?"

If you did not have gestational diabetes with your first pregnancy, then chances are good that you will not have it with this pregnancy. However, as we age, our risk of gestational diabetes does increase. Also, if you have a family history of diabetes or if you are a member of an ethnic group with high rates of diabetes (African American, Hispanic/Latina, Southeast Asian and Indian) then your risk is higher. Because we can not predict with certainty who will get gestational diabetes, the only way to know for sure is to have the glucose tolerance test. Unfortunately there is only one good test to diagnose diabetes and that includes drinking the high sugar liquid. This liquid contains a specific amount of glucose in each bottle. In order to have the test results be valid, each woman has to drink the same amount of glucose. There are normal ranges to this test that are determined based on the glucose in the drink. Hopefully your test results will be normal again. Often when women have gestational diabetes their babies can be larger than they should be. The fact that you are measuring less than 34 weeks means that your baby is not large for it’s age, therefore, it is a sign that you may not have gestational diabetes.
