"I am 28 weeks pregnant, my gestational diabetes test was 132. After I researched it, I saw that 140 was when they worried. However, I was just wondering, I have started to eat better meals and do more exercise, do I have to limit all my sweet intakes, or can I still have the occasional slice of cake?"

You are correct, usually if your blood sugar level is greater than 140 after the one hour glucose tolerance test, then you are scheduled for a three hour glucose tolerance test. From there, if two values are elevated, then you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. However, some physicians are more conservative, and if your number is “close”, then they treat you with diet and exercise to ensure that your blood sugar values stay within the normal range. Usually foods like cake and cookies will make your after meal blood sugars too high because your body can not produce enough insulin to counteract the hormones your body makes during pregnancy. These placental hormones are called Contra Insulin hormones because they work against the action of insulin. Insulin is what helps the sugar get out of your blood and into your cells. Do you have a meter to test your blood sugar at home? If you have a special occasion and you really want a slice of cake, try eating a small piece and then test your blood sugar one and two hours later. If your blood sugar stays under 120, then you do not have to worry about the occasional dessert. However, if your blood sugar does increase, then you may want to avoid those foods during your pregnancy. Usually your body does not tolerate glucose in the morning hours, so if you choose to have this food, save it for later in the day. Another option would be to eat your piece of cake and then take a walk. Exercise burns sugar, or glucose and will lower your blood sugar level. The most important thing to remember is that you want to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Learning about your body can help you achieve these goals.
