Diabetic for 8 years. Just went from oral medications to insulin. I have eaten over my 45 carbs on 2 different meals and within 30mins I have had the worse headache in my life.

Thank you so much for your question to dLife. If you are taking insulin (or oral medication which will lower your blood sugars), it is possible that you might be experiencing hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar). Hypoglycemia could be causing your headaches. If you are eating too many carbs at one time, and not enough carbs at another your blood sugars might not be well controlled. Headaches could also be caused from hyperglycemia (or high blood sugar). Your insulin dosage therefore should be evaluated, and might need to be adjusted by your doctor.

If you are taking too much insulin, or skipping a meal, or perhaps exercising strenuously (when your blood sugar is out of range), you might experience a low blood sugar which will result in a severe headache (along with mental confusion, irritability, and sweating).

Please make sure you are testing your blood sugars regularly. I suggest bringing a food journal and blood sugar record to your physician to discuss this very important medical issue. An RD/CDE can help you adjust your meal plan. Once you start eating healthy carbs with adequate fiber, protein and healthy fats, and adjust your medication, you'll hopefully start to feel better very soon.

I know I am going against the grain here, but I do speak from my own experience and that of other people that I know. But maybe the answer is to not eat the carbs, and not take the insulin. Eat the burger without the bun and without the ketchup, which has sugar in it. It will hardly raise your blood sugar at all, and you won't need the insulin to bring it down. And don't believe the "experts" who think that these carbs are actually necessary. Lots of us hardly eat any carbs at all and we're doing just fine without them.

The experts answer missed the fact that whenever I have low b/s (50 or less) when ever I eat to bring it back up get a "screaming" headache for @ 1/2 hr. In your case would look at how long it takes your insulin to "kick in", you could be going to low before you eat.
